Culpeper receives Virginia Main Street Milestone Award
- Culpeper Renaissance, Inc. and the Town of Culpeper receive award for private investment at Lynchburg ceremony -
Lynchburg, VA - On Thursday, March 25, Culpeper Renaissance, Inc. and the Town of Culpeper were presented with a Virginia Main Street Milestone Achievement Award for $40 million in private investment toward downtown revitalization since being designated as a Virginia Main Street community in 1988.
The award was presented at the Virginia Main Street Milestone Achievement Awards ceremony marking the 25th anniversary of the program at a special dinner held at Lynchburg's Craddock Terry Hotel.
Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development Director William C. Shelton addressed the Main Street volunteers, local leaders, businesses, local governments and private investors in attendance. "The work being done in Main Street communities requires a collaborative effort across the private, public, and nonprofit sectors," said Shelton to the group of more than 100 gathered. "Bringing them together in a shared vision of a vibrant downtown requires leadership. Over the past 25 years that leadership fostered a new climate in Virginia downtowns, helping to create more than 14,000 jobs."
Keynote speaker Chuck D'Aprix, founder of the D.C.-based organization, The Downtown Entrepreneurship Project. D'Aprix charged the group to make downtowns the center of opportunity by providing support and resources to potential and emerging business owners. "We should continue working to attract entrepreneurs, not just businesses," Dupree said.
"One of the focal points of the Main Street program is to create a business climate that encourages investment in the downtown district. Receiving an award for surpassing the 40 million dollar investment milestone is an unparalleled achievement for a town of this size. The revitalization efforts of the Culpeper Main Street program could not have been this successful without the participation and support of the Town and the community at large, and Culpeper Renaissance is grateful to be sharing in this acknowledgment of our community's strength." - Michael Lysczek, President of Culpeper Renaissance Inc.
In addition to Culpeper, VMS recognized the following communities for excellence.
* Abingdon
* Bedford
* Berryville
* Blackstone
* Franklin
* Harrisonburg
* Luray
* Lynchburg
* Manassas
* Marion
* Orange
* Rocky Mount
* South Boston
* Staunton
* Warrenton
* Waynesboro
* Winchester
