Meet Hugh Griffith, owner of The Chaotic Collector, where a lifelong love of collecting has turned into one of Culpeper Downtown’s most unique places to explore.
For Hugh, collecting has been a passion for as long as he can remember.
“A lifelong passion for collecting, combined with my 20 years of experience in retail management. Growing up, my dad always took me to card shows, auctions, and flea markets, which sparked a love of collecting that never went away. Opening The Chaotic Collector gave me the opportunity to combine that lifelong hobby with my retail experience and create a unique, fun place where I could share those passions with our local community.”
And when you walk through the doors? Expect the unexpected.
“I hope they feel welcomed and excited to explore. We’ve tried to create a space where there’s a little something for everyone and you never quite know what you’ll find.”
That’s part of the fun. You’ll find sports cards and memorabilia, vinyl records, vintage treasures, retro soda and candy, toys, and more. Whether you collect seriously or just want a bit of nostalgia, there’s something for everyone.
“Whether something brings back a childhood memory, sparks a new collection, or just makes you smile, we want people to enjoy looking around, reminiscing and experiencing a little bit of the ‘chaos.’”
Hugh says one of his favorite things about being in Culpeper Downtown is the community.
“I love the sense of community and the unique personality of Culpeper Downtown. There’s such a great mix of locally owned businesses, restaurants and events, and I love seeing people make a day out of exploring downtown.”
But there’s more to Hugh than collecting. When he was younger, he took two cross-country road trips with friends after high school, traveling across the United States and exploring.
“We got to see so many different places and parts of the country along the way. They’re still some of my favorite memories and experiences from when I was younger.”
And when it’s time to clock out and enjoy Culpeper Downtown himself, you’ll likely find Hugh at Far Gohn Brewing Company.
“Far Gohn Brewing is definitely a favorite. We love the laid-back atmosphere, great beer & pizza, and the sense of community they’ve created. It’s the perfect place to relax after a day at the shop, and we’ve really enjoyed partnering with them for our monthly Boxes & Brews events.”
From going to card shows with his dad as a kid to taking cross-country trips and now running a shop full of discoveries, Hugh has turned his lifelong passion into a place where people can browse, reminisce, collect, and maybe find something unexpected.
