The Inn at Fountain Hall of Culpeper celebrating 35+ years!

Steve and Kathi Walker opened Fountain Hall in 1985. It was the first of its kind in Culpeper. The first guests who stayed at Fountain Hall were a husband and wife from Florida. They asked about ghosts and were assured there were none. Not convinced, he told ghost stories, scaring his wife. In the middle of the night, Steve and Kathi were awakened by calls/yelling for help by this young couple. Turns out, it rained during the night. Water from the roof dripped inside the downspout, reverberating and then dropped on a terracotta pipe just outside their bedroom. The couple was convinced it was a ghost. To calm the guests, Steve went outside and tore the downspout off the house.

Fountain has welcomed guests from all 50 U.S. states and from numerous countries around the globe. One of the guests and now longtime friend of the Walkers was from the Netherlands. Many other friendships were formed since opening Fountain Hall.

Fun facts:
-Advertising directories only were in print and took up to two years to publish a new edition.
-Reservations originally were taken over the phone (not a cell phone) or in writing and sent via U.S. mail.
-The fax machine helped speed up the reservation 📝 and confirmation process, especially for international travelers.
-Maps were printed on paper.
-It was not unusual for reservations to be made a year or two in advance, especially in the fall.
-Handheld electronic devices did not exist.

Fountain Hall is the absolute BEST INN on the planet! I’ve stayed there since 1986 and loved every minute! I only wish Sean Connery’s ghost would come visit!
