Auditions will be held on February 15 and 16 at the State Theater in Downtown Culpeper (305 S. Main St. Culpeper, VA) from 1 – 4 pm.
Rehearsals will be held on Mondays and Thursdays from 6:30pm to 8:30pm starting February 20th.
Performances are scheduled for April 11-13 at the State Theater.
Play Description
Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest is a sharp and witty comedy of manners that satirizes the social norms and hypocrisies of Victorian England. The play centers around two bachelors, Jack and Algernon, who each lead double lives in order to escape their societal obligations and pursue romance. Through a series of misunderstandings, mistaken identities, and clever wordplay, Wilde explores themes of love, identity, and the absurdities of social conventions. The play is a delightful farce filled with sharp dialogue, memorable characters, and biting humor, making it a timeless classic in the world of theatre.
Character Descriptions
Jack Worthing (aka Ernest): Late 20s to early 30s, a young, eligible bachelor who creates an alter ego named Ernest to escape his country life
Algernon Moncrieff: Late 20s to early 30s, a charming, idle bachelor
Lady Bracknell: 50s to 60s, Algernon’s domineering aunt and Gwendolen’s mother, known for her social snobbery
Gwendolen Fairfax: Mid 20s, Lady Bracknell’s daughter, a sophisticated socialite
Cecily Cardew: Around 18, Jack’s ward and a young woman with a lively personality
Miss Prism: 40-50 Cecily’s governess with a slightly comical moralistic streak
Reverend Canon Chasuble: 40-50, a local rector who is mildly smitten with Miss Prism.
Lane (Age: 30-65) – Algernon’s manservant. When the play opens, Lane is the only person who knows about Algernon’s practice of “Bunburying.” Lane appears only in Act I.
Merriman (Age: 30-65) – The butler at the Manor House, Jack’s estate in the country. Merriman appears only in Acts II and III.
